Little Polly Flinders
Nursery Rhyme lyrics, origins and history
Little
Polly Flinders
Sat among the cinders,
Warming her pretty little toes.
Mother came and caught her,
And whipped her little daughter
For spoiling her nice new clothes.
(Girls
were often whipped into obedience and a
'whipping stool' was used for this purpose. It
is believed that the tragic Lady Jane Grey
received punishment via the whipping stool)
